Checkout queues, small talk, and lost last-minute picks

Customers waiting at a small store checkout counter with impulse items nearby

At a neighborhood pharmacy, the cashier knew half the evening customers by name. The warmth was genuine and valuable. It also stretched average transaction time enough that the impulse rack beside the till went untouched while people waited with phones already open.

We do not ask shops to silence friendly talk. We ask them to notice what happens in the queue behind the conversation. Sometimes a second tray for completed baskets helps. Sometimes the impulse items need to move closer to the waiting line rather than the paying customer.

Checkout notes from shopper behavior analysis for neighborhood retail should separate hospitality from friction. Both can exist in the same minute.
