Preparing your staff for a quiet field visit

Store staff member speaking with a visitor near shelves in a neighborhood shop

A quiet field visit fails when staff treat the observer as a secret inspector. Customers notice whispered warnings. Better practice: tell the team the dates, what will be written down, and what will never be photographed without owner permission.

Cashiers should have a short answer ready: “We have a visitor studying how the store works so we can improve the layout.” That sentence keeps the visit ordinary. It also prevents staff from changing their greets solely because someone is watching.

Share the observation windows, not the full hypothesis list. Staff who try to “perform” a perfect store create notes that no longer match ordinary trading days.
